Week 11: Build Your Network to Increase Your Reach

Networking expands your opportunities. It aligns you for promotions and other positions within your company. You can tap into your network for career advice and learning. If your external network knows you and your accomplishments, you will be top of mind when they have a need – which means that instead of spending your time chasing down elusive positions, you can spend your time and energy building your skills and sharing your accomplishments so that the opportunities can then find you. Being in the right place at the right time is not luck. It is the result of hard work and strategy.   

When I got started, I made a commitment to myself. I was very intentional in the way I went about meeting people. I would tell people that I was being intentional about building my network and that I’d like to get to know them, or I would tell them I was interested in learning about their role. When I went to events, I would make myself do three things: show up, meet three people, and commit to doing it all over again. These networking strategies are a big reason for my success. 

This week, we will focus on networking. We will build on the skills we practiced in Week 4. We’ll make new networking connections and spend time strengthening existing ones.
